Election 2008

With the first primaries starting in less than two weeks, I am going to be posting a few articles on the candidates. I have been thinking very seriously about whom I am going to support. Please comment on the candidates themselves in the comments, but as always, any comments are welcome.

This is not meant to be an endorsement of any candidate in particular. Since I am still undecided whom I will support, I cannot very well endorse him. I can, though, say that there are quite a few candidates whom I will not be supporting. Those who know me can probably guess a few names, I’m sure.

“Not endorsing” does not mean “suggesting one does not vote for this candidate.” These will be my opinions, only, and are only presented as such. I invite other authors to post their views, as well, either as comments here, or as their own posts. If you email me the text at wine_drinker at hotmail dot com, I’ll add it to the body of the post. Just be sure to let me know which candidate you want the text to go with, if it isn’t obvious.

Since he’s surging in the polls, I’m going to write my first opinion piece today on… (see next article).

    The Dude:

As much as I’d like to keep my views about who I’m supporting in the Republican Primary in the realm of the positive, there are three who I won’t vote for under any circumstances:

    - Rudy Giuliani
    - Mike Huckabee
    - John McCain

Sorry to go negative, but in my mind those three have demonstrated that they aren’t worthy of my vote, even in a race against Hillary. Ron Paul teeters on inclusion in that list, but the only thing that keeps him off of it is the reality that he won’t win anyway, so including him would be a moot point. I think Paul will go third party and that’s fine. It’s what he should have done from the outset.

The rest of the Repub pack I would be able to vote for in the general election. Obviously, many of us (including me) would love to see Hunter get the nod. Not going to happen though. Sorry. We all know that. So in the spirit of NRO endorsing Romney as the most viable conservative candidate, I will endorse Fred Thompson in the same manner.

That’s an important distinction to make: the most viable conservative candidate. We can all wish for who we wish for, but we need to make a compromise we can live with if our first choice candidate has no chance, and Hunter has no chance. Fred Thompson is a compromise that I’m willing to make. Note, once again, that this is my personal endorsement only. It does not represent the views of FauxNEWS.

Given that, I would also be willing to compromise and vote for Romney in the general election. I don’t think he’s a particularly stalwart conservative, but neither does he have a record or views that I find intolerable. The three on my no-vote list above I find intolerable. I find any/all of the Democrats intolerable also, but I’m not about to vote for one intolerable over another. Frying pans… fires… either way we feel the heat. I’m not playing that game.

    “again.”

I’m not playing that game again, either. Like I said in my introduction, I’m not really sure who I support, but I do know a few I don’t support. My views on the surging Senator McCain are now up.

I’ve put more thought into this election than any in my lifetime. I still don’t have a candidate, but I have considerably narrowed the field.

“Again” is correct Wino. Like you, I’ve given this election more consideration as to who I would and would not be willing to support than any previous. Perhaps it’s a function of age, because there really isn’t anything particularly unique about the lackluster field we have to choose from in this election over other years. Your post on McCain does a fantastic job of explaining why I can’t support him. I look forward to the others.

Go DUNCAN HUNTER. It’s really sad when so many say he’s the best conservative choice, but he can’t win. Our system is not good, if the best cannot win.
