Jennifer promises me that I will have her photos tonight. Since I am beat from work and cannot stay up late to get them tonight I will post them for you guys tomorrow.
Howdy All!
Sorry I missed the Faux Deaux Deaux–Can’t wait to see the pictures, of course the only one I will recognize is AW–perhaps someone could close caption them for me.
Anyway, to all of you that have prayed for us and have supported us with suggestions, job links and other means, we thank you so very much. I start new job this AM–still in HVAC, but takes me back a year to my original contract at the other company–still it’s better, I’ll be the only sales guy for a while, busy, but more profitable. We have about a 3 week window that will still be tough to get through, but if we do, we should be back on track w/in a couple of months.
Thanks again, and we look forward to meeting everyone at the wedding (if we are still invited).

COURT SETS ATHEISTS’ HOLIDAY
Have you heard about this case? Great answer from the judge!
In Florida, an atheist became incensed over the preparation of Easter and Passover holidays. He decided to contact his lawyer about the discrimination inflicted on atheists by the constant celebrations afforded to Christians and Jews with all their holidays while atheists had no holiday to celebrate.
The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the long passionate presentation by the lawyer, the Judge banged his gavel and declared, ‘Case dismissed!’
The lawyer immediately stood and objected to the ruling and said, ‘Your honor, how can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter and many other observances. Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah…yet my client and all other atheists have no such holiday!’
The judge leaned forward in his chair and simply said, ‘Obviously your client is too confused to even know about, much less celebrate his own atheists’ holiday!’
The lawyer pompously said, ‘Your Honor, we are unaware of any such holiday for atheists. Just when might that holiday be, your Honor?’
The judge said, ‘Well it comes every year on exactly the same date—April 1st! Since our calendar sets April 1st as ‘April Fools Day,’ consider that Psalm 14:1 states, ‘The fool says in his heart, there is no God.’ Thus, in my opinion, if your client says there is no God, then by scripture, he is a fool, and April 1st is his holiday! Now have a good day and get out of my courtroom!!
That’s an encouraging post Marc Thanks. It’s rainy in Cypress. blah. The temp was 80 around noon, now probably high 60’s Talked to kiddo at UNT around noon. She said it was feezing up there……..they had a bad storm, big hail, etc.
A SPANISH Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike
English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.
‘House’ for instance, is feminine: ‘la casa.’
‘Pencil,’ however, is masculine: ‘el lapiz.’
A student asked, ‘What gender is ‘computer’?’
Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two
groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves
whether computer’ should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each
group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.
The men’s group decided that ‘computer’ should definitely be of the
feminine gender (’la computadora’), because:
1 No one but their creator understands their internal logic;
2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers
is incomprehensible to everyone else;
3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for
possible later retrieval; and
4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself
spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.
(THIS GETS BETTER!)
The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be
Masculine (’el computador’), because:
1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;
2. They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves;
3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time
they ARE the problem; and
4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a
little longer, you could have gotten a better mod

I have a request of Wino, and others who care to offer advice. My son needs a crash course in writing essays. His H.S. school UIL team on history and current events is one win away from going to the State competition. He places first on tests but is the tail dragger on essays. My idea is to take his computer monitor and pound him on the head with it if I catch him playing games instead of studying. He has placed out of college requirements for freshman English, grammar is not an issue. What he is missing at is organization; Introduction, body, and conclusion. Just asking for ideas. (And please do not use examples of my comments on what not to do.)
An old fashioned way is to use index cards. If he has to do research, he writes it on the cards. He then reads his cards, organizes them and numbers them. Intro and conclusion will be easy, after he reads his cards and sees where his research takes him. If there is no research, he can do an outline, and do that on the computer. I.Introduction. and points can be A.B.etc. Body can be II. points he wants to hit….. and III can be conclusion… This is old school, My college prep was 67. I would have kiddo contact him, cause she has taken a ton of writing in college, but she is covered up right now.
My first advice would be for him to read a lot. Since there is not enough time for that, I am going to make a few suggestions that are general purpose. If I knew the way the essays were assigned in the UIL, I’d be able to give better advice. What follows is a list I’m making on the spot assuming he’s been given a task to write an essay about a certain topic with certain criteria, such as: “Compare and contrast with” another topic; Give examples of it; support your statements; explain how it applies.
1. Make a short, NOT detailed list of what is required: Main theme, compare, contrast, 3 examples, support, explanation of each. The list should be vertical, not horizontal (which I did here).
2. Make a short list of words that are germaine to the topic. For example, let’s say you’re told to write about the Mexican-American War. Some words might be: Alamo, San Jacinto, Santa Ana, Texas, Mexico.
3. Write down the main theme as the main sentence. If the assignment said to write about today’s presidential election, then you had better use the words “United States presidential election” somewhere in your first sentence.
The 2008 United States presidential election is unique for many reasons.
4. Group the words from list 2 by drawing some connecting lines between them. Don’t waste time re-writing your list. For example, Alamo and Texas need a line, as do Santa Ana and Mexico.
5. Do NOT try to use stilted vocabulary or “50 cent college words.” The purpose of writing is for communicating an idea as clearly and economically as possible. I have a very large vocabulary, and use it when I write, but I try to define esoteric terms when I use them. Esoteric basically means “outside the realm of common usage or knowledge.” You should NOT define your terms in your paper, if you use the correct word correctly. The judges should know the word or look it up. Yes… I just did what I told you not to do.
6. Remember that any paper needs to be at least five paragraphs long.
6a. The first paragraph states the main theme or purpose of the paper. The first sentence in the first paragraph states what the rest of the paragraph is going to be about.
6b. The last paragraph sums up what was said in all of the other paragraphs. It should not repeat the first paragraph word-for-word, but it should review the purpose of the paper, and show how the purpose was accomplished.
6c. The paragraphs in between should do what the first paragraph states they will do. The first sentence in each paragraph will need one of your keywords (at least), and the rest of the paragraph should be tied to the same idea as the first sentence.
6d. When completed, you should be able to read the first sentence of each paragraph, and have a complete idea of what the paper says. All other sentences will support the sentences you read. Any sentence that does not support the main sentence in each paragraph does not belong in that paragraph.
7. When finished, go back to the list from step one, and check off each item, to insure it was covered in your paper. Find the sentence, phrase, or whatever in your paper that fulfills the objective, and then cross out the word. Use only a single line to cross out the word on the “rule 1 list.” You should still be able to read it, in case you want to double check or do something else with it. You are only marking it, not obliterating it from the face of the earth.
8. All rules are made to be broken, but you should be aware when you break the rules above, and know exactly why you are breaking them. They are guidelines, but unless you have a valid and definite reason for ignoring the rule, then follow the rule, instead.
There’s probably more I could write, but that should be a good start.

Thanks Wino. On just a first read through of your reply I think 6d is an example of gameboy’s primary problem.
Ah the next generation….. Wino excellent advice! Wino is right about the first sentence of each paragraph. I had forgotten that point! old age hehe. He needs to be concise and to the point.
Well from one who magically seemed to please his teachers sans formatting of any kind……..AW & Wino GREAT stuff!
(but now my head really hurts)
GTO - all I can say is if you walk by close enough to that evil game boy with a hammer in your hand - you could trip and fall yanno………..those devices are pure EVIL IMHO. In the days of Nintendo I used to make my kiddoes earn time on the damn thing
Wino’s great list on writing an essay is what we call “Performance Support” in the training world. I would like to comment a little further on his suggestion to do a lot of reading.
I had Katfish’s “problem” in High School, and I struggled through my Bachelor’s program in college, pretty much on my own. Later in life, Marc told me about his use of “Cliff’s Notes” — they cover a lot of topics besides literature, and enable a person to cover a lot of reading and studying in a shorter time. (Actually, they are meant to supplement the real thing.) So I’m not suggesting this as a short-cut to real study, but as a possibility for quickly growing the mental database.
When I finally went back to school in middle age (no, not the middle ages!), my instructors kindly gave me a list of the requirements for all of my papers (not essays), I learned to use their list of requirements as my outline, with slight adjustments based on my topic (or how my topic fit into their outline). Worked like a champ! Of course, that’s not a fit for Gameboy’s needs at this time — just a little extra info for the future.

Glad to hear that the FDD was a success, I would have loved to come but our morning was what could be called a full and colorful day all by it’s self.
It started out with myself and my lovely wife testing for our probationary Black Belts and during the same time I also tested for my level 1 instructor certification. Yes I am working on becoming a Tae Kwon Do instructor. Add to that Oldest Daughter also tested for her level 1 Certification, as a 9yr old.
The big difference between what we are allowed to do in class is I can and am expected to be able to teach while daughter is only an assistant. So the level of responsibility is vastly different. And above all else my mother came and watched us (wife and I) test for the first time.
So we got home around Noon and were both physically and mentally spent. We all took naps and did not wake up till nearly 3 pm and then spent the rest of the day waiting for my car to come out of the shop after having to have the whole rear brake system rebuilt.
Look forward to seeing the pictures, Now all we have to do is wait out the day and hope that we do not receive a call from the academy saying that we did not pass part of our test…

I.Introduction. and points can be A.B.etc. Body can be II. points he wants to hit….. and III can be conclusion… This is old school, My college prep was 67. I would have kiddo contact him, cause she has taken a ton of writing in college, but she is covered up right now.

gto,
My first advice would be for him to read a lot.

AW, good ideas to beat into his skull in time. Gameboy is in a competition. They are given an essay question and write one with nothing at hand but the pen. But you hit me with a clue. ‘Outline’. A basic I had forgotten. Thanks.
