He Gets It

There’s a quality to Fred Thompson that I really like that I couldn’t exactly put my finger on… until now:

The moment of final liberation came when Des Moines Register editor Carolyn Washburn, the schoolmarmish moderator whom commentator Fred Barnes would later refer to as “Nurse Ratched,” asked the candidates to raise their hands if they believed that “global climate change is a serious threat and caused by human activity.” Before anyone could say anything, Thompson interrupted.

“I’m not doing hand shows today,” he said. “No hand shows.”

“Is that yes or no for you?” Washburn asked. “Do you believe that global climate change is — “

“Well, do you want to give me a minute?” Thompson responded.

“No.”

“Then I’m not going to answer it.”

“How about thirty seconds?”

“No. You know — you want a show of hands. I’m not giving it to you.”

The willingness to stand up and say to an idiot, “I’m not going to play your silly little game” resonates with me.  When I hear people pull crap like that question, my gut reaction is to tell them, “go sit down at the kids’ table… the adults are having a serious discussion here”.  That Fred essentially said that scores major points with me.  The rest of the article (from NR) can be found here.

America doesn’t need some self-righteous, criminal-pardoning tax and spender from Arkansas asking stupid questions about Mormonism that he already knows the answer to.  That kind of buffoonish behavior is exactly why I can’t support Huckabee.  If you want to impress me then have the courage and forthrightness to call a dumba$$ a dumba$$.  Fred has that courage, and that - among other reasons - is why he has my support.

I agree that was the best line of the debate. I was hoping that Fred would have a great moment. That was it in my book, that moment is kind of like waiting for the first cold snap to get here to get in the mood for winter. I am officially in the mood to support Fred from the mountain top. ;)

    Run, Fred, Run!

I agree with all of you. I think Fred can be strong, and do the right things, but man, he cannot get traction. Is it still early? My poor Duncan Hunter is not going anywhere. I loved Romney’s speech. I can say who I won’t vote for. 1. Ron Paul. 2. Mike Huckabee 3. Rudy Giulliani

From the day I saw Mike Huckabee standing with a bass in his hand, I knew I couldn’t vote for him. I don’t want an entertaining, message bringing, crowd pleasing president. The next years are going to be a critical time for this country.

Whoever is running the GOP should be flogged. It is that person, among many, who think that the GOP should move more left (why, look at the ‘06 electons, they say! People WANT us to move to the left, don’t they? Duh!) instead of staying right and keeping with Republican principles. Moving away from Republican principles are what lost them the ‘06 elections. Many state Republican GOP leaders know this, where are the national leaders and why are they (and they are the ones in power to move their candidate towards the primary) moving towards the left?

The left wants nothing but Huckabee who they know they can beat in the general because he is the only one that they can compare to the hated Bush. Vote for Huckabee and you will get another Bush! That is why the media is so behind Huckabee and the GOP is just too stupid to see it. Huckabee is just too stupid to see it. Too many egos here and too little common sense. If I can figure it out, why can’t our wonder men and women in the national GOP offices see it?

If I can’t have Duncan Hunter, then I’ll vote for Fred! Thompson! He is the most conservative of the lot!

This comment says it all, Neo:

“Moving away from Republican principles are what lost them the ‘06 elections.”

I’d replace the word “Republican” with the word “conservative,” but I agree 100% with the sentiment.

    I like that answer too.

I think I would have to throw my support behind Wino. (But he’s not running) So I would have to back Ron Paul for domestic policy and Wino for foriegn.

I think I will just back “Off” and observe for now.

I feel your pain on that one, AW. Mrs. Dude and I both would love to see Hunter get the nod. But you know as well as we do that it ain’t gonna happen. So at some point, once you realize that the candidate you want the most ain’t gonna happen, you have to go with the one who’s still relatively close to your principles/viewpoint and that actually has a chance of winning. Fred Thompson fits the criteria.

Fred is the only responsible adult of the bunch. I would love seeing a Fred-Hillary debate.
